Muscles
Structures and functions
Muscles are structures that promote active joint movement, and may contribute dynamically to stabilise joints. In general, they are divided in 3 parts: tendons (connects them to the bones), myotendinous portion, muscle belly.
Quadriceps
The quadriceps muscle is one of the most important structures of the lower limb. It runs along the anterior surface of the thigh, having 4 portions: rectus anterior, vastus lateralis, vastus medialis, vastus intermedius. It promotes leg extension (putting your leg straight), connecting to the leg through the quadriceps and patellar tendon.
Hamstrings
They are a group of muscles that run from the buttock to the knee through the back of your thigh: semitendinosus, biceps femoris, semimembranosus. Working as a group, they contribute to hip extension and knee flexion.
